The Mets took out a week’s worth of frustrations with seven solo homers, including back-to-back-to-back blasts in the third inning, and posted an 11-4 win over the Phillies Saturday night in Philadelphia. The two club are now tied for first at 46-31.
Brandon Nimmo got things started with a homer in the first inning to give the Mets the lead. In the third, Francisco Lindor Nimmo and Juan Soto all left the yard to give the Mets a 4-3 lead.
Soto added a solo homer in the fifth, Jared Young went deep in the eighth and Francisco Alvarez hit the longest homer of the night, a 452-foot shot to left center in the ninth for the game’s final runs.
It’s now 28 straight games the Mets have won when Lindor homers, going back to last season. Lindor also stroked a two-run double to right field in the sixth, a ball that the RF completely overran. He might not have been able to catch it even if he played the ball perfectly, as it was high off the wall, just missing another homer by a few feet.
Griffin Canning got the win, even if he allowed four runs in 5-plus innings. He had good stuff, getting 16 swing and misses in the outing. It was just too many baserunners, as he allowed six hits and two walks. But it was enough and we’re not turning up our nose at any win right now.
The unsung star was Huascar Brazoban, who came on with a runner on firsts and responded with two shutout innings. When Ryne Stanek replaced him in the eighth, the Mets held a six-run lead.
Soto had a four-hit night and his slash line is up to .256/.393/.484 and Nimmo upped his OPS to .777 for the season. On May 23, Nimmo had a .671 OPS and he’s been on a tear ever since.
The Mets will look to take the series with David Peterson getting the ball for the Sunday night game.
Didn’t get to watch this game until the later innings but it was exciting to see the team explode. Lots of hits up and down the lineup and even Alvarez contributed although I think we all feel Torrens should be given more time behind the dish. Young hit another HR but a .167 average deserves to be somewhere else. Would rather see Mauricio DH and Young find a new home. Peterson for the series win before the Braves come to town for four games. Time to turn the tables on them. Will Montas be taking one of those starts? Manaea had a great rehab outing and hope he’s headed back soon.
Gut Reaction: Monster Ball and a monster game. They needed a win. All the home runs were fun and were celebrated in the chatter but the key hit was Lindor's two run double that expanded the lead to 7-4. Let's win tonight , takes the series and move into sole possession of first place.
