Gut Reaction: Mets 6, Marlins 1 (5/30/26)

Christian Scott came out guns a blazin’ and the Mets pounded out six extra-base hits, including two home runs, to win their third straight game, this one a 6-1 victory over the Marlins Saturday afternoon. It was a nice way to celebrate the induction of Lee Mazzilli and Bobby Valentine into the club’s Hall of Fame.

Scott struck out two batters in each of the first four innings, tying a career high. The streak ended in the fifth, where he gave up a run. Still, the 5 IP, 1 ER performance was enough to get Scott his first career win in the majors.

The Mets broke a scoreless tie with a crooked number in the fourth inning. Mark Vientos cracked a two-run double off the wall in left field to open the scoring. Marcus Semien had an RBI single to make it 3-0. It was the second hit of the game for Semien, who doubled leading off the third inning but made a foolish attempt to score on a safety squeeze where the bunt was hit way too hard.

Jared Young and Hayden Senger hit solo homers, the first of the year for both players. For Senger, it was his first homer in the majors.

The Mets had 10 hits, led by Carson Benge with a 3-hit day that included two doubles. And Benge made a nice running catch in the outfield, one that saw him run into the wall. A.J. Ewing also made two nice plays in the field.

After heavy usage in last night’s win, the bullpen had to deliver four innings again in this one. Newcomer Clionel Perez joined Huascar Brazoban, Austin Warren and Devin Williams with a scoreless inning to close the door.

New York is now 13-2 when it scores at least six runs in a game. The Mets will look for a sweep on Sunday, with Nolan McLean hoping to bounce back from a couple of poor outings in the 1:40 p.m. start.
