The Mets hit three home runs for the fourth time in five games this year against the Rockies, en route to an 8-1 victory in Denver. The Mets are now 41-24 and have won 11 of their last 14 games.
Ronny Mauricio started the scoring off with a monster HR, one that landed in the third deck that Statcast had at 110.3 mph and 456 feet.
After the Rockies tied the game in the fourth, Jared Young homered to give the Mets a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish. Jeff McNeil hit the team’s third homer, a solo shot that went 414 feet to right center that made it 4-1.
Clay Holmes was the recipient of the offensive outburst. Holmes allowed a lot of baserunners but it was almost all weak contact. Sometimes you feel a pitcher is lucky to escape the baserunners. This one it felt like the Rockies were lucky to get the baserunners.
Holmes finished with 6 IP, 1 ER, 0 BB and 6 Ks. He’s now 7-3 with a 2.95 ERA.
Jose Butto threw strikes and ended up with two scoreless innings with no walks. Jose Castillo finished up and kept his scoreless streak as a Met intact, now at seven innings with nine strikeouts. It was a welcome night off for most of the pen, and with an off day Monday the pen should be in good shape.
Francisco Lindor, making his first start after being out of the initial lineup the past two nights, had a 3-hit game with two steals. Brandon Nimmo had two hits, including a double, a walk and drove in two runs.
The Mets go for the sweep Sunday afternoon with Tylor Megill getting the ball in the 3:10 p.m. start.
Nice win over the hapless Rockies. Holmes scattered nine hits over six innings with six Ks and no walks. Butto and Castillo closed the door. Can’t remember the last game where the Mets pitchers issued no walks but sure that Brian will be able to retrieve that fact. A sweep today is critical against such a bad opponent. Hard to believe the Rockies have fallen so far. Great offense from other than the big three and enough offense up and down the order to have guys on base to knock in. Mauricio hit one into another zip code showing what he can bring to this offense and he batted 9th yesterday. Mets still left seven runners on base but assume they did better with RISP than they normally do.
Upcoming games against the competitive Nats and Rays at home will be a challenge and despite how bad they are, traveling to Atlanta after those series is never an easy trip for the Mets. The combination of a Mets surge and a Phillies dive leaves the Mets 3.5 games ahead of them and 13 up on the Braves. Let that last stat sink in for a moment. Megill has struggled in his last several starts after a great start to the season and today he gives the Mets a reason to either keep him in the rotation, move him to the pen or option him to AAA. It’s not like a 3.77 ERA is bad these days and would probably make him a #3 starter on many teams. It’s all in his hands today and hopefully the Mets will forget that this is a travel day day game and and remember that they still need to hit.
4 starters with an E.R.A. under 3. That ll play.
The cameras couldn't even track that bomb Mauricio hit. Tantalizing.
