The Mets announcers started the broadcast by saying how today’s home plate ump was the most hitter-friendly in the game. Sure enough, the two teams totaled 16 walks. The difference was that the Rays cashed in on five of their nine free passes, while the Mets didn’t score one of their seven walks. The end result was a 9-0 loss and the first time all year the team got swept in a series.
There are all kinds of ways to lose and the Mets showed us three different types. Friday night was blowing a 4-1 lead, Saturday was a poor defensive game that led to four unearned runs and Sunday was a game where it seemed like the bags were already packed for the upcoming road trip and no one gave a great effort.
You know it’s a bad offensive day when your hitting star is Luisangel Acuna, who had two of the team’s five hits and also drew a walk. Juan Soto had three walks but flied out with the bases loaded to end the game. Pete Alonso came up with six runners on base and went 0-4, with two strikeouts and a double play. The only reason it wasn’t worse was that Soto ended the game before he could strand three more.
How bad was the game? Gary Cohen called Acuna Luis Guillorme.
In the Game Chatter, Bob pointed out that the Mets have three pitchers with a 0.00 ERA and two of them pitched in this game. And the Mets still lost by nine. After being up 5-1 in Game 1 of the series, the Mets were outscored, 23-4, the rest of the way.
The Mets have a day off to reflect on how bad they were against the Rays. And then they have a road series against the Braves, the first time all season that they’ve played their division rival. David Peterson takes the mound in the 7:15 p.m. start on Tuesday.
For anyone familiar with youth baseball this series looked like a typical club team (Mets) vs a team that focuses on the little things and does everything possible to win (Rays)
Gut Reaction: good teams still have losing streaks but psychologically it is better not to get swept. Acuna had 2 hits but he is still below. 600 OPS. Vientos is starting his rehab on Tuesday. It was a terrible series and the Mets were outplayed in every aspect of the game.
