There are currently 30 MLB players to have at least 80 PA as a second baseman. Semien ranks 27th with a (-0.1) fWAR. Interestingly, one of the three teams to have a worse 2B is Texas. Maybe we can orchestrate a reunion there. How thrilled the Rangers might be to have both Nimmo and Semien. Talk about winning a deal!

Jeff McNeil generally ranks a little worse than the middle of the pack but certainly better than what we have and he was a much cheaper alternative.

I think by the end of the season we will all view Marcus Semien as a net positive for this team. Though that may be because he displays prowess for driving in runs off the bench all year long. That'd be ok by me.

It will be curious to see what happens if/when Polanco/Robert/Lindor come back. Polanco and Robert were clearly placeholders and protection in case the kids didn't develop. But here we have Vientos looking like Hernandez at 1b, and Baty starting to hit, with Benge and Ewing (sss) looking comfortable. The team on the field now is much more representative of the kind of team Stearns built in Milkwaukee. Young, fast, athletic, strong fundamentals. They are probably (and certainly based on the play lately) a better team with the current construction than with some of the vets. So I assume when Lindor comes back Bichette goes back to 3b and Baty is the full time DH, backup 1b. But the fans would riot if the young guns are still succeeding and one of em gets sent down to make room for Polanco or Robert. The August 1 lineup could very well be:

Benge RF

Lindor SS

Soto LF

Vientos 1b

Baty. 3b

Bichette DH

Ewing CF

Torrens c

Morabito 2b

Bench: Semien, Taylor, Polanco, Senger

I like this lineup except that I don’t think Morabito can handle second base. Also, don’t see how they can have a $45-50 million bench. I’m betting either Polanco or Semien goes at the trade deadline, even if our hope is that the Mets will also be buyers at that point.

It’s amazing (I love that word in referencing the Mets) what a few wins and some actual hitting will do for the vibe. Vientos still is rough around the edges at 1B, but he has definitely looked better of late. Stearns had an awful offseason, following what looks like he flushed $75 million down the drain on a post-prime, half a decent season Manaea, but to his credit he has held on to most of his prospect chips and the older baby Mets. With Lindor, Polanco, Roberts, Senga, and Holmes nowhere in sight, they’ve got their chance.
