Those OPS numbers for Benge and Ewing are interesting. Cause that includes a 5 for 10 stretch from Ewing. Benge has come up clutch in the last 2 wins.
And as for the trades...the 2024 group certainly came up big during the playoff run especially Winker and Stanek. Getting two org top 30 prospects from a team with a top 5 system in exchange for basically a middle reliever is abt as much as one can expect. And we get to talk about Benny Agbayani for the next couple seasons! Fun.
I agree that was probably as good as they were going to get for Minter. Which is why I don't understand why everyone was so eager to trade anything that wasn't nailed down. Under the Wilpon-Katz era, you could say that the salary relief was worth ... something. Now we've got two more guys that if the planets align correctly, maybe they'll get a cup of coffee in the majors. I'm not completely dumping on this - hey, Brooklyn and Binghamton need players, too.
Winker had a 95 OPS+ for the Mets in 2024. Stanek had a 6.06 ERA but was better in the postseason. That's not anything to get excited about.
Bo Bichette is a singles machine, only registering 3 XBH and an ops of .655 in July. Hes walked 7 times and struck out 15, while recording the lowest number of total bases of any month this season. June numbers are propping up the recent feel good.
Mets only got Bichette as a reaction to losing Tucker. Hoping he opts out but who’s gonna pay him $42 million after a season where he is hitting? A .667 OPS is absurd. He could still accumulate career appropriate HR and RBI totals, but he has just a third of the doubles he had last year with 2/3 of the season gone. Let’s just simply call it what it is, another David Stearns screwup transaction.
I love random stats. They always stir up thoughts. I have no illusions of landing top prospects for our players who are for sale. I see a selloff as a necessary evil of having the collective result of having a bad team. It will be good to clear the deck. Part of the challenge that we will have is that we will still be stuck with a good number of crappy players. So, who this year and next year will replace them? Thats the problem. Our farm team has graduated to the show. Now we have very little left of value who we could trade for a good player. Is somebody going to miraculously offer us a real first baseman for the likes of Clifford, Morabito, Santucci or Tong? No they are not. I am not a pessimist, but between now and opening day next season is Stearns miraculously going to build a sustainable winner? Why is it that the Dodgers have like eight players in the top 100? That means their funnel is full. They can get much more value than we can with trades. Or they can just let Freeman, Betts and Muncy age out and replace them with their young talent. That is what happens when you build a sustainable winner.
And yes, I would much rather spend $ 42 million elsewhere rather than on Bichette.
Maybe Kyle Tucker can’t play in a big high pressured city🤣 103 games and he has nine HR and 51 RBI and an awful .702 OPS. He will straighten it out but it’s nice to see a rare move by the Dodgers that does not work out. Perhaps the best thing that can happen in baseball is for the Dodgers to get knocked out of the playoffs. One can only dream.

That would kill MLB’s dream. I still believe the Blue Jays wanted to help the Dodgers win last year.
