Wednesday catch-all thread (3/12/25)
Please use this thread all week to discuss any Mets-specific topic you wish.
Here’s how the six starting pitcher have done so far in Grapefruit League action:
Clay Holmes - 9.2 IP, 0.00 ERA, 2 H, 4 BB, 13 Ks
David Peterson - 7 IP, 0.00 ERA, 2 H, 2 BB, 7 Ks
Tylor Megill - 6.2 IP, 1.35 ERA, 4 H, 2 BB, 7 Ks
Griffin Canning - 5.1 IP, 0.00 ERA, 3 H, 1 BB, 7 Ks
Paul Blackburn - 4.2 IP, 11.57 ERA, 8 H, 4 BB, 1 K
Kodai Senga - 2 IP, 0.00 ERA, 2 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks
Combined with his strong close to 2024, Megill deserves to make the club out of Spring Training. Still, the possibility exists that since he still has an option left that Megill will go to Syracuse until the Mets need a sixth starter. If Megill is in the rotation to start the year, they can have Blackburn in the pen. Or perhaps in Triple-A on a minor league rehab stint.
Paul Blackburn hasn't looked good and with the others on your list performing it would make sense for him to start on a rehab assignment or in the bullpen at best.
Very encouraging spring pitching stats and except for Blackburn who got shelled. But then again, we are not supposed to put much faith in spring or September stats. Still, happy what they have shown so far, especially Holmes, the surprise new ace of the staff. Megill does deserve to make the staff and I would like to see more from Senga than pitching to minor leaguers on a back playing field. Also, nice spring start for Kranick, who is working hard to snag a spot n the pen. Soto has been strong as advertised, and Baty, Vientos and Torrens have impressed.
Frightening how well Roki Sasaki has pitched this spring and too bad there was not subject to a bidding war that Cohen could have competed in, versus a “why not join my fellow Japanese players” on the world champion Dodgers. Another interesting tidbit is that no prospects who the Mets got for Scherzer or Verlander have cracked the Mets lineup. I’d still make those same deals but wondering the prior GM was smart enough to get the right talent. If Acuna progresses then we can put all that to rest.
Love all the anxiety over in the Bronx who lost Cole for this and part of next year due to pending TJ surgery. Now the Yankees will know how the Mets felt when Senga went down. If the Mets can’t win it all, at least finishing better than the Yankees is always a nice consolation and allows me to win the annual bet I make with a friend over who will have the better season.
