Give Benge another week and if this continues, send him down to Syracuse. Young and Baty will be fine. Imagine if Robert was not doing well too....

Suddenly Young is a hero! It’s only two games.

Sheesh, I said he'd be fine. Now, a "hero" is Nolan McLean at 10 starts!

Prospects be prospects, Acura,Gilbert and Clifford we paid millions for them (Scherzer and Verlander salaries). The Baby Mets,Baty,Vientos,Alvarez. Kelenic?

But don’t package him and Tong forSkubal

I think they give him 100 at bats. I would if only because as you point out, it's not hurting the team, and I really don't see a downside. Look at Chourio, Carroll, Julio Rodriguez and many others who came up fast - all struggled at first, stayed up and figured it out. If he was costing the Mets games, I'd say send him down, plug Baty in and let it roll.

Baty and Taylor aren't doing so well either. Soto is nursing his calf on the active list. Young is capably filling in for Soto. When Soto is healthy and can start then I would demoted Benge at that time if he doesn't hit. Insert Baty in rightfield because he has the top ceiling of the other rightfield candidates. Benge can be promoted after a he succeeds at AAA if the Major League roster has a need.

It is obvious that he is not ready. What he needs is to go to Syracuse and continue to develop. I would give him another two weeks.

Well now we know that Soto is on the 10-Day IL and Mauricio has been brought up. I think this guys Benge some time to straighten out. Once Soto comes back Benge might go to Syracuse if he’s struggling. Why bring up Mauricio? Where’s he going to play? It makes no sense to bring him up to DH once a week and maybe 3-4 ABs a week. Not a Pham phan but this seems like the right place for him.

There was no fast start for an outfielder in Syracuse.

Looks like this may be it for Mauricio.

If they try to send him down after this call-up, he gets exposed. They may already have a standing offer out on him, and if that is the case, then if he does not make a meaningful contribution, this could be the end of the line.

I hope he sticks, but as a right-handed platoon option in the outfield? That is a very weak-side role for him.

If Polanco is dealing with Achilles issues, then the more sensible right-handed arrangement would be Mauricio and Vientos splitting DH and first base.

I thought Mauricio has a full “option year” meaning he can be sent up and down at least 5 times without dfa?

I really did not know. Thanks for correcting me.

On a completly different topic I annoyed the Mets are retiring Beltran’s number. I think Cohen is watering down this Mets honor role. The 2006 team was really painful. Only one playoff appearance, losing to the Cards when we were heavily favored and then 2 collapses in ‘07 and ‘08 when we had really good teams. Why do we want to celebrate that? Beltran had some good years but we didn’t win with him and that Mets cohort.

I have no issue sending Benge down especially considering his meteoric rise through the minors without that much time at AAA. I do remember the story of Willie Mays who reportedly opened his rookie season 0-21 but the manager, Leo Durocher, told him center field was his. Benge is no Mays but if he can still be a strong defender in RF and occasionally CF and add to the run prevention goals, then I am happy to bat him ninth and see how he can progress. With Soto down for a few weeks, they really could use that bat that he showed for a few games.
