This a neat idea and makes sense to me. Sterns might have been telling us the same all along by not signing Iglesias and leaning into the young guys.

Joe McEwing was a fan favorite with a niche that I'm not sure you could quantify (versatility). My family used to say if we were able to draft any major leaguer to our backyard wiffleball games it would be McEwing haha

I still think Baty is going to be an above average regular in MLB. He needs to figure it out at the major league level, but he’s done it in AAA and I believe he will get there. I would expect that ultimately he will end up as the team’s regular 3rd baseman with Vientos eventually shifting to DH, but if Baty can master a couple more positions, that would certainly make him more valuable. I’m predicting a break out year for him.

FWIW - Joe McEwing is one of my least favorite Mets of all time. You know, because he couldn't hit. In 1,169 PA as a Met, he had a 69 OPS+. He had one year where he was an asset. The problem was that he played five years with the team. My opinion is that this is the exact type of guy who should never make the roster again.

He wasn't quite as inept as Doug Flynn or Rey Ordonez at the plate. But he was close.

As for Baty - I want him to succeed. But I won't argue with anyone who calls that wishful thinking of the highest order. He got the 200-plus consecutive PA that I wanted him to get in Triple-A last year. Maybe that last bit of seasoning is just what he needed to succeed in the majors. Or maybe he can't hit, either.

Same here, Brian. Never understood how he was revered. I’m with you: if Baty is that comparable to McEwing, we should cut out losses. He’s still young though, can turn it around, etc

While Baty again riding high on baseball’s “march madness”, I’d like to see the Mets spin him for another top prospect starting pitcher utilizing the chance he “looks” like he can play in The Show. No matter what, Baty has no obvious path to being an every day major leaguer. There is no reason to imagine the Mets are just going to move Vientos off 3B especially as he gets more reps and cements a working relationship with the guy to his left. He’s too big and not agile enough to cover 2B, and when Mauricio returns he’s already a better hitter and fielder at 2B (assuming he returns ok). I cant help but think his best hope to stay a Met is playing LF when Nimmo moves to 1B next year after Alonso moves on.

If you trade Baty now, you'll be selling low. If you wait 4 months you may not be able to trade him at all.

The question is if trading him now for some Paul Blackburn/Huascar Brazoban type is worthwhile, especially if you think there's any upside at all left.

If Baty hits, they'll find room for him. No different than Acuna and Mauricio. There are serious doubts among all three of them

Chris Paddock for Brett Baty. Would you do it?

I think better or younger than Paddack.

If Baty makes the team it will be his hitting not his versatility. If he puts up a 644 OPS, like McEwing did as a Met, then he will be sent down. Second base and left-handed DH are the opportunities for him if McNeil and Winkler falters. Otherwise, he is a bench player with limited at bats and has to make the most of them. I hope he doesn't become Joe McEwing.

I see Baty moved at the deadline because if Mauricio comes back strong, he would be a better candidate at either 2B or perhaps in the OF. And you have to love Acuna in the field over Baty. Joe M might have been a fan favorite super sub, I agree that he was a waste of a roster spot.

Only way Baty can be the next McEwing is if he comes up with a funky on-deck routine.

I'm all for Baty getting the bench role. With injuries lurking, I like his versatility. If Nimmo can't shake the knee injury, Baty might get some run in LF, or at 2b while McNeil shifts to left. Either way, I like it.
