Brandon Nimmo hit another grand slam and Pete Alonso slugged two homers to lead the Mets to a 12-6 win over the Yankees Saturday afternoon at Citi Field. The Mets are now 14 games over .500 and have won four in a row.
After the Yankees went down in order in their half of the first inning, the Mets loaded the bases, thanks to a double and two walks, which brought Nimmo to the plate. On a 1-2 count, Nimmo hit his third homer – and second slam – in four days, giving the Mets an early 4-0 lead.
Alonso hit a two-run homer in the fifth and a three-run blast in the seventh. He now has 20 HR and 73 RBIs on the year.
The Mets’ offense, which had been spotty during their rough patch, has really picked things up. They banged out 10 hits, six of which went for extra-bases. And they also drew five walks. Getting on base via the free pass was in short supply when they were scuffling.
Frankie Montas got the start and was solid thru the first five frames, giving up two runs. But he went out for the sixth and allowed two more runs in two-thirds of an inning to drag down his final line.
Carlos Mendoza ended up using five pitchers in the game, including Ryne Stanek and Edwin Diaz both for the third time in four days. That’s less than ideal in a game you win by six runs. It was reminiscent of a Buck Showalter game. But perhaps it’s understandable to make sure you lock down a win after coming off a stretch where there were too many losses.
The Mets go for a sweep Sunday afternoon, with Brandon Waddell on the mound for the 1:40 p.m. start.
A big win against our crosstown rivals who are in a bit of a funk themselves. While I am a big fan of small ball, loving this monster ball explosion across the lineup. Another GS by Nimmo and Pete steals the show burying the Yankees with his second HR of the game. Hardly mattered that the end of the order was 0-14 with the front of the order going 10-18. Montas back to his first start form giving up no walks and pitching into the sixth inning. Great job by the pen giving up just two runs. Big lift today against Fried, but if the Mets bring their bats on this last day home stand, a sweep might just happen. Hoping Pete breaks the Mets HR record on 7/23 when I will be in attendance!
Gut Reaction: when they hit with RISP good things happen. When they hit home runs with RISP they have an explosion. Monster Ball! Usually I would comment about using Stanek and Diaz with a 6 run lead. With the pitching staff decimated with injury and recent meltdowns from the bullpen Mendoza took the lock down win. They need bullpen help. Great series win, four game winning streak and a chance to sweep today!
