David Peterson had a strong bounce-back effort after two poor starts and the bullpen shut the door for a 3-2 Mets win Thursday night at Citi Field. The victory gave the Mets their first series win since the middle of June. In their previous five series, the Mets went 0-4-1.
Peterson was a ground ball machine, allowing just an unearned run thru 6.2 IP. After retiring the first two batters in the seventh, Peterson served up a gopher ball and it was a 3-2 game. Peterson gave up an infield hit and was lifted for Ryne Stanek, who was called upon for a rare back-to-back outing.
Stanek gave up a line drive, one that kind of knuckle balled out to third base. Mark Vientos hung tough and caught it for the third out. Stanek came back for the eighth inning and struck out the side. It was the first time this year he recorded four outs.
Edwin Diaz came out for the ninth. After striking out the first batter, Diaz allowed an opposite field single. Whenever runners get on base against Diaz, they try to take advantage of his slow delivery to the plate by stealing. But this time, it backfired, as Luis Torrens got a caught stealing, thanks to a call overturned by replay. Diaz struck out the next batter for his 18th save of the year.
Brandon Nimmo opened the scoring with a homer in the second inning, his 17th of the season. The other two runs came in the sixth, as Juan Soto had an RBI single and Pete Alonso had an RBI double. Alonso also threw out a runner at the plate.
The Brewers have owned the Mets in recent years but the Mets have won the last two series between the clubs, with a win in the playoffs last year followed by this one. Tonight’s victory was the Mets’ 50th win of the season.
Next up is the Subway Series. The opener is a 4th of July day game, with a 3:10 p.m. start. Freshly recalled Justin Hagenman gets the start.
Nice win taking the series from the Brewers. Good pitching and timely hitting weathering the fielding of Baty and Vientos. A laser to second by Torrens and a great tag by Lindor. Marte with two hits in the leadoff spot - just when we all want him moved to another team. Perhaps they are showcasing him for an eat most of his salary trade. Hard to believe Hagenman gets the start over McLean. He’s bounced around the minors since 2018 getting his first chance in the majors this year and his limited play at Syracuse was ugly. Crazy that odds makers see him coming out on top of loud mouth Marcus Stroman. This is the game they need to take as they face Rodon and Fried in the next two. 1.5 games behind the Phillies vs Yankees who have lost 7 of 10 and are now 1 game behind the Blue Jays. LGM
That was a great game...I especially liked that almost surreal moment when Yellich and Lindor were standing there on second base, both of them watching the slow motion replay on the giant screen, the crowd going nuts...
