hamstring strain, IL trip, MRI tomorrow for the severity, but looked about the same as Vientos so I'd bet 3-4 weeks. Real shame cause we were on track for a 2nd straight complete game shutout!
Tyrone "unsung" Taylor with another incredible game impacting play on defense (plus on base twice).
Senga reportedly sent his translator to tell Alonso that he felt something pull in his hamstring just before he leaped for the catch. Solid teammate.
They obviously have the depth to withstand this - can plug blackburn in plus Montas and Manaea are close. But sure would be nice to have a looksie at Nolan McLean (rather than another Tidwell game).
Yes, a very classy move on Senga’s part. Would be interesting to learn why Alonso doesn’t underhand the ball to first like they used to do back, oh, a couple of years ago…
This looked like a classic "tweener," although that itself is not an excuse for Pete's throw. Too far away for the typical underhand soft toss, and too far to throw the ball properly overhand. Ziele did a good job explaining that the soft overhand is hard as Pete had to lower his elbow which caused the ball to sail. fair enough.
However there are better options. I was taught to run right at the base a step or two and forcefully underhand the throw, like in fast pitch softball. Another possibility is to just throw the ball overhand with a little zing so the ball travels normally. The lazy overhand or underhand will not work 15-20 feet from the base. What he fails to understand that the play is at the base. He just needs to throw the ball to the base and expect the pitcher to be there. The base is the only thing not moving, and the pitcher *must* go there. Throw at the base or a little past the base towards the outfield. chest high. These are things I learned in LL and HS baseball and sort of disappointed that a pro can't do better. Practice Pete, practice.
Pete has a throwing issue. I heard it called the "yips" yesterday, but I believe that when Simone Biles gets the yips. He doesn't have the yips, Pete just is a shitty thrower. It can be fixed by dedicated practice. We all know he ranges too far right stranding pitchers on the mound. We know he struggles with the 363, and he struggles throwing home. Unfortunately all these are very important plays for 1B.
Chris, that’s the form I was thinking about when I wrote my comment. It’s hard for me to say that 15-20 feet is too far away to throw underhand, but although Pete made a great throw to the plate last week, his throwing to second and to the pitcher covering are always high! Always! And he throws sidearm, and you can tell he is aiming it.
Be honest now . . . who had the Mets at 15 games in front of the Braves by June 12?
A little early for scoreboard watching, but if the Mets play .500 ball for their last 93 games (ok, 47-46), Atlanta has to play at a .663 clip the rest of the way.
Gut Reaction: Sweep! McNeil and his 917 OPS should get an All-Star selection. Acuna only should be a defensive replacement after McNeil bats. If Acuna needs at bats then send him to Syracuse. Nimmo has a 757 OPS and rising. Senga's injury was unfortunate. Stanek has faced Washington 3x this year and given up earned runs in each game. Maybe it would be wise not to use him against the Nats.
The Mets had a 10.5 game lead and were in first place on June 1st 2022. They won 101 games that year and finished second. Don't count your chickens before they hatch.
I looked up Stanek's splits by inning and he consistently has done better in earlier innings than late. So far this year his ERA for each inning are:
6th 0.00 (faced 1 batter and got a DP)
7th 2.70
8th 1.23
9th 7.04
Career wise it is:
6th 2.63
7th 3.24
8th 3.76
9th 5.30
Extras 7.50
He has pitched earlier in games in his career, as he got some starts as an opener, but I left those out to focus on the innings he will typically pitch for the Mets.
Seems to me he should be a middle inning/set up guy and keep him away from the 9th or later.

On this particular play, throwing underhand wasn't an option, as it wouldn't have had the velocity to get there on time.

which would be better than the Mets have played to this point. Not happening (on either side of that ledger).
