Pete Alonso belted two home runs to lead the Mets to a 6-1 victory over the Dodgers Wednesday night in Los Angeles. With the win, the Mets clinch the season series, with a 4-2 edge and only one game remaining.
With the Mets up 1-0 in the first, Alonso ripped a two-run homer to stake Griffin Canning to a 3-0 lead before he even threw a pitch. And Alonso clinched the win with a 447-foot blast, a three-run shot, in the top of the eighth inning that made it 6-0. He now has 14 HR and 53 RBIs on the year.
The power show by Alonso overshadowed an excellent start by Canning, who threw six shutout innings, limiting the Dodgers to just three hits. And while we pointed out earlier in the week how Canning suffered the largest third-time-thru-the-order penalty of any of the team’s starting pitchers, he retired all four hitters he faced third time around, with strikeouts of Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman.
Canning now is 6-2 with a 2.90 ERA on the season.
Jose Castillo added two scoreless frames, sent out again for the eighth inning after Alonso’s second homer. Ryne Stanek allowed his first homer of the year in the ninth but was working with a huge lead which made the home run almost meaningless.
The Mets will try to take the series tomorrow afternoon, as David Peterson toes the rubber in the 4:10 p.m. start.

Turned it off after six innings as I was literally falling sleep and hoped 3-0 would hold up. Thrilled it did. Kudos to Alonso for the way he has stepped up. If he had done this last year he’d prob be playing somewhere else on a five year $160 million contract. Thankful that two of the Mets four hits were his two long balls. Another fine outing by Canning. If you think about the battles with the Dodgers this year, the Mets were in position to sweep at home and sweep in LA except for those two extra inning losses. Now they have the season series in their pocket if it’s needed. Odds makers have Peterson losing the afternoon finale but I’m in for another series win against the defending champs.
Cmon Gus,give the kid a break. It’s two games.
