An enjoyable game to watch in that the Mets took the lead in the first inning and their starting pitxher was a buzz saw that didn’t give the Dodgers a chance. Mauricio looks pretty rusty. How did he hit .580 in AAA?
Can you imagine where the Mets would be if Brazoban didn’t throw a middle up fastball to Muncy on an 0-2 pitch? Hard to understand why the Mets starting pitching is this good, but Manaea and Montas are coming.
Mauricio isnt rusty Gus, its the jump from AAA to the bigs is like the Grand Canyon in scale. I see it more as welcome back to the show…it humbles everyone.
I also cannot understand the Houdini-like black magic with the rotation. I’ll admit I was wrong about Sterns’ choices — so far anyway. Getting Manaea back (hopefully) will be like getting our first summer reinforcements. Montas? Who knows.
No big for Brazoban. He’s earned a lot of good will from us all. He clearly missed the spot - it happens.
I see Alvarez has stepped up and took responsibility for calling the fastball. Great article in The Athletic today about the Mets pitching and preparation for the Dodgers.
I was coming here to post that. In fact, as a player that came up three years ago, I’m not satisfied that “he stepped up”, I want those brain farts to go away. From the article Chris is referencing:
“That’s why it was so strange to see deviation during the Mets’ loss on Tuesday night. In the ninth inning, Huascar Brazobán threw Max Muncy a 1-2 fastball down the middle. The situation called for a changeup, Brazobán’s best pitch.
Brazobán and catcher Francisco Alvarez went with the fastball because they believed Muncy was sitting on a changeup.
“That’s 100 percent on me,” Alvarez said.
The Mets want Brazobán to throw his changeup a lot. Even when the batterymates think someone is sitting on the changeup, they still want Brazobán to throw it.”
Why?
It’s what he does best, so they want him to lean into it as much as possible.”
I think Alvarez is regressing on multiple fronts. That passed ball the other night was inexcusable. He needs to stop it with believing the hype and just get on with being a pro. At this point the team is better with Torrens behind the plate, and he should be getting 2 of 3 starts.
Yes, and Hernandez today on the wild pitch was blunt about Alvarez not stopping a ball that bounced right in front of his left knee that was on the ground. It has to be mental, he used to be better across the board.
Turned it off after six innings as I was literally falling sleep and hoped 3-0 would hold up. Thrilled it did. Kudos to Alonso for the way he has stepped up. If he had done this last year he’d prob be playing somewhere else on a five year $160 million contract. Thankful that two of the Mets four hits were his two long balls. Another fine outing by Canning. If you think about the battles with the Dodgers this year, the Mets were in position to sweep at home and sweep in LA except for those two extra inning losses. Now they have the season series in their pocket if it’s needed. Odds makers have Peterson losing the afternoon finale but I’m in for another series win against the defending champs.
Gut Reaction: Canning pitched a gem ,shutting out a very formidable lineup. Who is the SP2 on this staff? Canning, Holmes and Peterson have been all consistently good! And to top it off, Castillo it's two more shutout innings. To me that was totally unexpected. In Pete's last dozen games he has 1.020 OPS, 5 HR and 16 RBI. Let's take the series this afternoon and keep rolling.
I don’t have a problem with Brazoban, other than the execution. I have a huge problem with whoever called that pitch! A fastball on 0-2? Really? Ninth inning up a run?
If you mean Mauricio, I have no problem giving the kid all kinds of rope. He’s worth it.

53 RBIs is enormous. I'm excited to see how far Alonso can take this.
I wonder how long Conforto will be tolerated if he keeps hitting like this.
Cmon Gus,give the kid a break. It’s two games.
