Juan Soto delivered an RBI single to drive in the zombie runner in the top of the 10th and Huascar Brazoban nailed down the save, as the Mets claimed a 7-6 come-from-behind win Tuesday night in Baltimore. During the game, Gary Cohen said the Mets haven’t had a comeback from a four-run deficit. Now they have that.
Trailing 6-2 in the eighth inning, Brandon Nimmo singled to lead things off and Francisco Lindor followed with a monster home run to straight away center that cut the lead in half. Soto blooped a single and Pete Alonso hit an opposite field homer to tie things up.
Reed Garrett pitched a scoreless eighth, bailed out by a nice defensive play on both ends by Ronny Mauricio and Alonso. Edwin Diaz pitched a scoreless ninth inning. In the Game Chatter, we wanted Diaz to return for the 10th but Brazoban had a 1-2-3 frame for his second save of the season.
Clay Holmes started and was strong thru five innings, as he allowed just one scratch run. But after the Mets gave him a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth, Holmes fell apart. He was 0-2 on the leadoff man and then hit him. And then he allowed four straight hits and it was 5-2 Orioles before we knew it.
The Mets were handcuffed by an underwhelming pitcher thru five innings. They finally broke thru in the sixth, with three straight hard-hit balls. Mauricio led off with a home run, Brett Baty doubled and Nimmo followed with an RBI double. But they were unable to add to the damage.
It was a nice team win. Holmes gave five strong innings before running into trouble and the pen allowed just 1 ER in 5 IP. The offense produced 11 hits and four walks, with five extra-base hits. Even the defense chipped in, as Luis Torrens threw out two runners, Mauricio and Alonso combined on two nice plays and Jeff McNeil made a diving catch in center field.
The Mets try to take the series Wednesday night, with David Peterson getting the ball in a nationally televised game by ESPN.
Gut Reaction: It an exhilarating, come from behind win that resulted in a first place tie with the Phillies. The front of the lineup can to damage very quickly. Now Mauricio, Baty, Winker and McNeil are above 700 OPS so now they have a deep lineup. I was surprised Diaz didn't pitch the 10th because it was only an one run. Braz0 was clutch when he stranded the ghost runner.
Great comeback win and I managed to catch the last two innings on my iPad. Lots of offense from the top four in the order with great offense from two of the last three and great relief pitching. Nice job by Holmes until that sixth inning. Kind of wonder if he is starting to face an innings limit or perhaps they just figure him out third time through the order.
Great win by the Giants against the Phillies with a three run inside the park home run to push the Mets into a tie for the division lead. Love a series win tonight. And if course a sweep tomorrow.
