Well, Juan Soto had what you could call a good game. He had three walks.
The rest of the Mets did not.
Tylor Megill started for the Mets and unfortunately, his May struggles continued against the relentless New York Yankees’ lineup. After a fitful first inning in which he gave up a hit and a walk, he sailed thgrough the second, albeit with an elevated pitch count. That would bite him in the third. In a 39-pitch inning, Megill surrendered three hits and three walks, good enough for four Yankee runs. He would not survive to the third out. Max Kranick came on and threw one pitch and retired second baseman Yorbit Vivas. The bad news is that he was the tenth batter of the inning – he’d led off with a single and scored on Cody Bellinger’s base hit, which itself was accompanied by a throwing error by Francisco Lindor.
For their part, the Mets threatened a comeback in the top of the fourth, when Soto led off with a walk, moved down to third on Mark Vientos’s one-out single and scored on a Starling Marte force out, which came tantalizingly close to being a single through the middle. Francisco Alvarez then walked, but Luisangel Acuna ended the inning with a fly to right.
There was no answer to the Yankees bullpen, even though starter Carlos Rondon only went five inningsand threw 102 pitches. Until the ninth, that is.
With two outs, there was a flurry of activity as Francisco Alvarez drew a one-out walk, Jeff McNeil drew a two-out walk, and Francisco Lindor hit a bleeder of a double behind third to score a run. But Soto hit a weak pop to center to end it.
The Gashouse Gorillas get to crow about this one.
It’s Griffin Canning vs. Clarke Schmidt tomorrow.
In six starts in March/April this year, Megill had a 1.74 ERA
In three starts in May, he has an 8.76 ERA
Coming into this year, Megill was 7-2 with a 2.84 ERA in March/April but in May he was 2-5 with a 5.66 mark.
It's good to have things you can count on in life.
Nice job Charlie. A lot better than the Mets bats were swinging. A lack of timely hitting bit the Mets again when it looked like they could get right back into it with a couple of knocks. Canning to stop the losing streak today. DVR ready to go. Big win for the Knicks who crushed the Celtics to everyone’s surprise.
