I’m irrationally annoyed with Zach Pop.
The Mets fell behind by five runs against Max Fried and somehow were able to cut the deficit to a single run, before losing, 6-4, in the finale of a three-game series against the Yankees. The loss snapped the Mets’ four-game winning streak.
With all of the injuries to the rotation, the Mets had to run a bullpen game. Chris Devenski started and threw two hitless innings. Next up was Pop, who the Mets had just signed to an MLB deal. Pop gives up a solo homer and a 118-mph double en route to giving up 3 ER in 1.1 IP. It’s just another lousy outing by a disposable reliever. It shouldn’t annoy me more than any other scrub who’s come in and gotten lit up.
But it does.
The Mets made a nice comeback. Francisco Lindor had a two-run single and Jeff McNeil drove in a run with an infield hit. But the Mets had two additional run-scoring opportunities thwarted by good defensive plays by the visitors.
A sweep of the Yankees would have been sweet. And it would have been extra special doing it with a bullpen game. But those dreams went pop with Pop’s outing. And now I’m popped off.
Pop, pop – the weasel goes pop. May that song play in the background when the Mets DFA Pop.
Sorry, it’s not rational. It’s just how I feel right now.
Happy to win the series especially beating Rodon on Saturday, and yes this game was defined by two timely double plays by the Yankee D. Tired of seeing nobodies run out there to pitch. This falls on Stearns for not having better relievers and hoping that the Met magic continues with whomever they trot out there. Yes, the staff has been decimated but that’s when you bring up a McLean or Sproat or Tong to throw a few innings not Pop goes the weasel. If he was any good he would not have been released by another organization. On to the lowly Orioles and another chance to win a series.
Mets need to call up Alex Carrillo. Stop messing with the Zach Pops of the world.
