It’s a healthy perspective. I know a handful of Braves fans fairly well and while they liked sweeping the Mets, of course, they are despondent over their season. Slumps happen. In addition to running into a hot Braves team, the Rays have been on fire. They whupped up on Detroit last night, for example. On this coast, Giants fans are already worrying about Devers, especially after he came up empty last night in his showdown with the BoSox. It may get worse, through this series and next week with the Braves again, but they will still be in a strong position come the second half. It’s a long season!
Ok, while some of that list surprises, not all of it does. Blackburn missed the whole winter getting better health wise, so there wasn’t an opportunity to improve baseball wise. He is what we was last year. Acuna, Mauricio and Baty are repeating their patterns. Baty has a chance to be solid, Mauricio hasn’t had his growing pains yet.
Alvarez…. As a scout from another team said to SNY, he could become better and should, but that’s not guaranteed. Manaea was solid last night, but weeks away. Montas… fingers crossed. Holmes and company only going five innings most of the time is getting old.
You’re telling me Young is a better option than Manesis, who has had success in the majors? Is Stearns doing his best Alderson imitation again (acting like he’s the smartest man in baseball)
The Baby Mets and Alvarez have been disappointments. Can1 or maybe 2 become solid league average players? Will Senga and Manaea be solid starters? Is McClean or Tonggoing to get a shot?
The big picture is are that the Mets are a good team. Their pitching staff has the best ERA in MLB and that's without Manaea, Nunez and Mintor. Senga, Manaea, Peterson, Holmes, Canning and/or Montas is a formidable rotation. The bullpen might need some help . Raley and Megill could be internal solutions . Alonso and McNeil are having very good seasons. Soto, Lindor, Nimmo and Marte are solid. Taylor and Alvarez , two career offensive players, have to improve their offensive production. Vientos, having a down season but average, is still the better offensive option at third base. When Winker gets back the DH position will be solidified. The only thing they have to do is solve the RISP problem. It is hard times but I see a playoff team and maybe a division winner.
It is interesting that the Yankees just went through a stretch of losing seven of eight games yet I heard no whining or panicking from Yankee fans. Think how well the Dodgers have done with the decimation to their pitching staff. Of course it helps that most of their lineup can hit the cover off the ball. The Mets are a good team but it’s scary that they tend to go on team hitting slumps every now and then that defies logic given the talent that they had. They need Vientos to come back as last year’s version and to get Montas and Manaea on the mound. They will be a shot in the arm to this weary pitching staff. Will continue to question why a young is on this roster.
