One of the things that makes Brandon Nimmo my favorite player is his broad set of skills, one that gives him the chance to put up the elusive .300/.400/.500 line.
Glad to see the credit to McNeil. He’s had his ups and downs but when he’s been good, he’s been one of the best all around hitters in the league. Hopefully the folks that feel he’s nothing more than
solid utility guy and a decent bat at the bottom of the order have come around.
McNeil with his .869 OPS is a good fit batting 5th every day. If he wasn't hurted and had 326 AB like Lindor , Soto and Nimmo then he would have 14 homeruns and 37+ RBI also based upon his current production. The Mets 1-5 batting order is potent. He is passable as the center fielder but his best position is second base. He is not standing in the way of Acuna, Baty or Mauricio who are below career average MLB hitters. Those players had opportunities and didn't cash in on them. McNeil has turned around his career and with his production he shouldn't be traded.
Don’t know if I’ve ever seen a guy who brings so much value so quickly dismissed by fans. Usually when guys produce fans are more than willing to look past all manner of personality quirks. It must be the constant “f-me” demeanor he carries around that turns people off. If he had any swagger, any “f-you” in his game I think New Yorkers would love him.
I admit that I’ve written the guy off at least twice in recent years. I am firmly on the bandwagon now and love how he is outshining all of the rising “stars.” That I live in his hometown and get occasional McNeil callouts when I’m wearing my Mets cap only adds to it. He’s been solid this year.
Marte gets a mention in this article and he’s another veteran I’ve written off even more than I have McNeil. He’s producing and in light of the weaknesses elsewhere, we need him. He will probably fade later this season and hopefully one of the kids figures things out by then.
