The Mets won a game and lost a starting pitcher Thursday night, downing the Braves, 4-0. The victory gave the club a split of the four-game series with the Braves and allowed the Mets to re-take first place in the N.L. East at 48-34, a half-game ahead of the 47-34 Phillies.
Griffin Canning hopped off the mound in an effort to field a ball and slipped. He left the game with an undisclosed leg injury, which Carlos Mendoza later said might be an Achilles. They’ll know more after they do imaging but he’s probably going to be sidelined for a while.
Newly activated Austin Warren came up big with 2.1 scoreless innings in relief of Canning. Dedniel Nunez authored two perfect innings with four strikeouts, with Ryne Stanek and Edwin Diaz completing the shutout. It was the first time all year that Stanek pitched in back-to-back games.
Pete Alonso had three hits and an RBI, Jeff McNeil had a two-run single and Juan Soto had a hit, a walk and two runs scored to pace the offense.
The Mets travel to Pittsburgh to play the Pirates. David Peterson gets the ball Friday night, in a 6:40 p.m. scheduled start time.
Kudos to Mets for bouncing back and gaining a split. Very important to weather the storm and psychologically to regain first place. When Uncle Steve said he was modeling the team after the Dodgers, I didn’t realize he was referring to pitching injuries.
So great to split the series after losing the first two games. And thanks to the Phillies for getting swept to put the Mets back in first place. The win also helped hammer the Braves deeper in the standings. Terrible about Canning so now we’ll see how smart Stearns can be handling who to bring up. I too would like to see McLean, who does sound like a McDonald’s meal, come up and get a start with the big club. Kudos to the release staff for stepping up and shutting down and completing a shut out. Onto Pittsburgh, where we will not face their ace and time to put a hurting on the Bucs.
