Thanks for this David. Wondering if this was written before McLean s triple A debut which was marvelous. And not to quibble but you seem to have left out some important context around Jonah Tong s last start and unserplayed the performance somewhat. 6.2 innings of Nada with 13ks.
I dont think the big league team needs to add much at the deadline but they certainly ly do have the chips to make a splash if they want.
Oh man, I had written that up when he was promoted and missed the outing on McLean. Truly a miraculous thing for a prospect pitcher to succeed in AAA for us.
Tong would have been the focus of AA if I hadn't had him the focus from last post already.
It was the first time I can remember a prospect coming up to AAA recently and dominating. I think McLean is now the top pitching prospect and would not be surprised to see him up by the all star break, even if in the pen. He was a reliever in college I believe as well. Nasty nasty stuff.
Metsense and I saw Brooklyn play in Asheville recently. Neither Baro nor Vargas played in the one we saw. And I fully realize that you can't tell anything from one game. Still, here are my thoughts:
Impressed:
Benge - Played LF and showed a good arm. Was constantly on base
Ewing - Played CF and seemed like a natural there. Had 3 hits and seemed like the best player on the field.
Reimer - Didn't seem to have the body to play SS like he did in HS. There was one foul pop that could have been 50-50 who would field it but he didn't move but a couple of steps before giving up. But he looked like a really good hitter in the box.
Serrano - He DHd in this game and didn't have a hit. But he had good ABs and hit the ball hard.
Ronald Hernandez caught but didn't stand out one way or the other
Christopher Suero played 1B and had two hits. But if I didn't know he was a top prospect, I wouldn't have remembered his day.
Jesus Baez was the least impressive of the group. He played SS but it would be a surprise if he stayed there by the time he was playing Triple-A ball.
It certainly isn’t Brooklyn’s fault that Syracuse has so little talent. Ziegler should be there, but…. Clifford will be soon. Parada should have been there, but…. Alex Ramirez? Hamel? Lavender? Vasil? My point is that what were previously top prospects flamed out; what were prospects in the top 20 were left unprotected; and our constant companion: injuries.
As for the positives, Jett appears to be kept at SS for trade value purposes, otherwise he would have been in the middle of the grass. They won’t play Acuna there either….
Allan only pitched two innings his last start. Hamel relieved tonight and soon, Tidwell, Sproat, McLean, Tong, Waddell and Felipe De La Cruz will be an incredible pitching staff.
Comical that Syracuse only has two outfielders on their active roster! Ten hitters and 23 pitchers! Tell me that isn’t funny…
Lastly, has anyone heard a good word about Boston Baro in a while? Wow, after a good start he disappeared.
I enjoyed listening to you and Brian on the podcast a few weeks ago discussing the prospects. I used to live near the Syracuse Mets but never took full advantage of the opportunity to see them regularly and now regret it. I still have family there, so hopefully will get a chance to see them this summer, and I'll use your guide here as my reference point for analysis.

Right now, the fastest climber in the system is Ewing. He seems like he's going to go up two levels in the same year.
Regarding promotions - just announced:
RHP’s Matt Allan, Raimon Gomez and Nate Dohm promoted from Low-A St. Lucie to High-A Brooklyn
RHP’s Dylan Ross and Anthony Nunez promoted from High-A Brooklyn to Double-A Binghamton
I guess Advanced A is up to 15 Top 50 prospects.
