With three starting pitchers who are now free agents and the Mets at least somewhat likely to use a 6-man rotation for Kodai Senga, the Mets need starters.
Hard to believe the Mets would jump on the Garrett Cole train given the exorbitant salary he is likely to secure. Hard to believe that he opted out of his Yankee Yankee contract thinking there were greener pastures out there. Same for Blake Snell, who must think money grows on trees. Seems the Mets should be able to land two new front line starters in the combined $20-$35 million range.
It's possible that both Cole and Snell got bad advice on their opt-out decisions.
It's also possible that the price of starting pitching is significantly greater than you think it is. The idea that the Mets are going to "be able to land two new front line starters in the combined $20-$35 million range.," seems very unlikely to me. You believe Manaea will sign a 3/$63 deal - which fees low to me - and that leaves $14 million for your second front-line starter, which is absolutely low.
Don’t see it happening from either the Yankees or Mets side of the equation. Yankees can’t afford to not keep Cole and of all the money to spend on pitching I certainly wouldn’t enter his market in lieu of Soto.

Yankees still have Gil, Schmidt, Cortes, Rodon and Stroman if Cole leaves. They could decide that money is better spent on Soto or a younger pitcher.
Yankees keep Cole
Mets extend QO to Alonso, Manaea and Severino
