Two ground ball singles for Benge on Sunday. The first one happened when SNY lost its video feed. They never showed it but said it was a bouncer that got by Zack Short. The other was one that the 3B reached for and it went off his glove. But both of them were against a LHP and that was nice to see.

Out of Senga, Benge and Kimbrel, I worry more about Senga than the other two. I feel that maybe he doesnt have the mental fortitude to weather adversity.

Benge may be just working on his bat to ball skills. Could be best for him to do a 30 day stint at AAA.

Kimbrel, it depends. If he makes the roster, who gets cut? That has a lot to do with it.

Tong needs a good amount of time at AAA, to work on his arsenal of new pitches.

Scott needs to build up after missing last season.

Garcia, Brazoban, Hudson, Myers. Kimbrel needs to beat out one of these four. I dont see it unless, he really impresses in the next 2 1/2 weeks.

Spring training stats are meaningless if you are a established veteran that has a contract and a guaranteed spot on the roster. The healthy veteran won't lose his spot on the roster. Case in point Senga; just because he having a bad spring training statistically but he is in jeopardy to be the designated as the SP6. Kimball had a MLB resume to fall so he as some leeway but didn't have a guarantee. If he doesn't look right and have a bad spring training he will be in jeopardy to make the team. Rightfield is up for grabs. Tachman and Melendez are having an excellent spring statistically and playing for a roster position. Benge doesn't have a AAA resume and doesn't have a guarantee. Baty and Taylor are penciled in for the roster but they could be rightfielder as well. The spring training statistics are meaningful for all those rightfielders.

Good analysis

Metsense, I think you absolutely nailed it. The ST numbers are brutal to assess, but those players looking to earn a promotion need to perform, especially if put in beneficial positions, like playing against lower degree opposing competition and competing with teammates for depth ranking. The actual numbers are spongy to be sure, but the relativistic performances absolutely do matter.

I know that the way we look at spring training numbers should be very conditional and personalized, but I feel encouraged about Senga’s number of walks and discouraged by Vientos’ number of hits. Some spring training trends look like they matter more than others.

Vientos, to me, looks like a player who feels like his team doesn't believe in him and so instead of proving them wrong has allowed it to impact his effectiveness. Im not seeing where his ABs are coming from nor am I seeing any trade value. I think he s a dfa candidate which would have been unthinkable a year ago. Baseball.

Randy Johnson was a notorious horrible spring training pitcher. I recall one ERA over 11, but when the season started…. oh boy.

I agree with Kimbrel that a veteran isn’t going to get pumped for spring training. In fact, I like the intangibles he can bring to the team.

As for Benge, I would say he needs more AAA, but has anyone seen Melendez lately? Not too much heard from him.

I agree that Vientos is soft. He is, and I hate saying that.
