Thursday catch-all thread (5/1/25)
Please use this thread all week to discuss any Mets-specific topic you wish.
Clay Holmes has gotten off to a great start in his transition back to being a starting pitcher. Sure, there’s the complaint - one that gets logged for every starter on the team - that he doesn’t go deep enough into games. Still, if at the time that he signed we were told that after six starts Holmes would be 3-1 with a 2.64 ERA, we all would have signed on the dotted line to receive that type of production.
Other than innings, the one thing that isn’t great for Holmes is that he’s allowing too many walks. He has a 3.82 BB/9. For a comparison, during his career with the Yankees, in 217.2 IP as a reliever, Holmes had a 2.9 BB/9.
Yet we see that Holmes has improved both in IP and BB from his first three starts to his last three outings here in 2025. Here are his numbers:
Starts 1-3: 14.2 IP, 9 BB, 4.30 ERA
Starts 4-6: 16.0 IP, 4 BB, 1.13 ERA
It’s easy to overreact to three starts but that’s terrific production. The key will be to keep it up for a longer stretch, as well as against tougher competition. Those last three games were against the 13-18 Twins, the 14-17 Cardinals and the 13-18 Nationals.
Holmes’ next game will be on the road in St. Louis. It should be noted that the reason the Cardinals are under .500 is because the Mets swept them in a four-game series.
I emailed Brian about the current Brooklyn Cyclones but I want to talk about this roster. If we factor in two currently injured players, the Cyclones have 13 of the Mets Top 30 prospects currently The lineup for the Cyclones is ridiculous:
1. Eli Serrano III, RF (Ranked 21st)
2. Carson Benge, LF (Ranked 2nd)
3. A.J. Ewing, CF (Ranked 17th)
4. Jesus Baez, SS (Ranked 10th)
5. Jacob Reimer, 3B (Ranked 22nd)
6. Chris Suero, 1B (Ranked 15th)
7. Boston Baro, DH (Ranked 23rd)
8. Ronald Hernandez, C (Ranked 16th)
9. Marco Vargas, 2B (Ranked 20th)
Injured: Corey Collins, 1B (Ranked 25th)
This squad (more or less) scored 15 runs behind another brilliant outing by Joel Diaz, RHP (Ranked 12th). They also technically have Jonathan Santucci, LHP (Ranked 19th) and the injured Calvin Ziegler, RHP (Ranked 24th) and may soon add players like Nate Dohm, RHP (Ranked 26th) and Matt Allan, RHP (Ranked 40th).
Mets announced the following moves:
RHP Ty Adcock (#52) and LHP Genesis Cabrera (#92) have been selected to the major league roster.
RHP Chris Devenski and LHP Brandon Waddell were optioned to Triple-A Syracuse following last night’s game.
Waddell deserved to stay.
