Happy new year everyone. So the Mets are stuck with Marte’s contract, but keeping him off the field can only help him stay healthy so they can take advantage of the talents he still has to be the DH. Would prefer to have one strong DH instead of two complementary pieces, neither of whom can be relied on to play full time. The Edgar Martinez’s of the world are just few and far between. Are they better off signing Winker, or seeing if Baty or Mauricio can do the job and be a backup infielder? Why can’t they rotate players in the DH spot as a way to give them a partial day off? A new year with some of the same questions.

My preference is to have one guy get the lion's share of at-bats in the DH slot. My opinion is that this is where Stearns and Cohen should flex their financial clout and get that guy. Would've been nice if they were able to land Teoscar Hernandez here. But I like that they were in there punching.

Santander would make all the sense in the world. Switch hitting, 40 home run power who can spell occasionally at RF/LF and 1b? Yes please.

Happy new year everyone! Don’t y’all think that Marte in his walk year will have more motivation to actually participate?

When he was last an upcoming free agent, he played in 120 games. Now that he's four years older and been on the IL consistently - can't see a reason to believe that he'll magically play 130 or more games at age 36.

I don’t think Marte is a slacker. He’s been hurt bad. From the sounds of it he had a double hernia. That would be incredibly painful. He’s cut like a michealangelo statue so he works hard. If he’s healthy he’s a solid bat.

Marte at DH is not good. We need a big bat like Santander. Add Bregman, Sasaki and a couple of relievers and we will be ready to go.

Supposedly this year, Marte will be the DH with his $20.75m salary. Marte had similar to Martinez production in 2024. Marte was bWar 0.7 , fWAR 0.6 and Martinez bWAR 0.5, fWAR 0.6. Marte had a .844 against LHP. It would be prudent to supplement the DH the LHB. Baty or Mauricio could get opportunity. If this is the plan then the DH position should have similar to production of the 2024 production.

If Stearns signs Alonso or Bregman then I can live with this plan. Alonso or Bregman for the corner infielders is the only plan that will improve the 2025 at this point of the off season.

Marte is finished. Id rather see Baty get DH at bats to see if he can work out of his funk at the show. Why have a guy that is done getting at bats? He will probably retire after next year. I mean do we really want Marte and McNeil taking two slots in the lineup. Trade Marte, eat half of his salary and trade McNeil for a reliever. If we are going to be in it to win it, we should be all in. Right now, we are not. We could lose Alonso and Bregman. Then what do we do? Lets get one of them, Santander, another starter and two relievers. That is being in it to win it. Yeah, Stearns may be a wunderkind, but he doesnt have a WS win. If you bring back the band and rebuild the A's pitching staff, it is insanity to think that we have Koufax and Drysdale. My honest bet is that Sasaki goes to the Dodgers to play with Ohtani and Yamamoto. How in the world will we beat the Dodgers with our DH Marte and wiffle ball bat from McNeil and a starting staff, where we have to hold our breath. This team has a lot of potential, but we really need to fill needs and and upgrade multiple positions.

From SNY:

The Angels are the latest team to be connected to Alonso.

"Angels looking at it," Jon Heyman said on Wednesday during a Bleacher Report live show. "Again, I think it's the years -- possible gap there. They certainly are weighing that. I do believe Arte Moreno does want to get another big bat in there."

Heyman added that free agent outfielder Anthony Santander "is probably a little more likely" for Los Angeles than Alonso.
