Good article in the athletic today about how good the mets pitchers have been at limiting hard contact and extra base hits. They ve been the best in baseball and by a healthy margin. Most surprising? Megill was 4th in all of baseball in ISO (slugging- batting average). Went up to 12th after last nights game. And some on social are suggesting he ll get sent down for Blackburn. Um. No.

There s another article there today that is less good - 5 trade proposals for Paul Skenes with the mets offering Sproat, Benge, Jett, and Clifford. More comical than the proposal is the logic behind it. Read for yourself if you want a good chuckle.

I've been extremely happy with Baty's resurgence as he was at one time my absolute favorite prospect. I'm gaining optimism on this being reality but know that Baty is always going to be a player with hot and cold streaks. For me to buy MLB success I need to see him get cold in the majors and recover without demotion.

Good stuff about Baty's minor league power. Thought he was more of a good average hitter.

When the Phillies play the Braves who do you hope wins?

The Braves are rivals but the Phillies have the worst fans in baseball. Also, we should want the Phillies to slide back beneath us in the standings.

The Phillies. This is not a logical answer. I just hate the Braves and have for many years with that stupid tomahawk chop

Thankfully it's a long season and we get to agonize over the Mets for several months. Nice to see Baty making the most of this opportunity and Vientos' the long ball today reminds us of what he can do. He needs to keep hitting. Have no issue putting a youngster in at DH versus always trying to find playing time for semi-washed up players. The DH should be a prime spot for a good hitter and it would not be absurd to expect 85-90 RBI from that spot. You won't get that from Winker and Marte, but might form Baty/Vientos or switch hitter Ronnie Mauricio.

Today's open thread trivia fact brings us to this day in 1969 when the Mets started a team-best 11-game winnings streak by beating the Padres. They were 19-23 this day on their way to a 100 win season and their first championship. That year cemented by quest to root for the underdog!

Give Baty two weeks at third and let Vientos DH. Bite the bullet, release Marte.

How do you come up with 2 weeks for Baty? You said the same thing recently. What do you think he needs to do to stay in the lineup?

If Baty maintains his 747 OPS for the rest of the season then it will be a successful, improving season for him. I like Nimmo in the two hole and McNeil 5th, followed by Vientos, Baty, Catcher and Taylor. Mendoza plays everyone and I'm generally satisfied by the way he is running the team.

I am tired of McNeils wiffle ball bat.

McNeil. 809 OPS second best on the team. 446 SLG, 203 IS0 .That is not a waffle ball bat.

Last weekend I was talking to some friends who like the Yankees. As we discussed the Mets vs Yankees series one of them mentioned how he was amazed that Alonso is not a DH, saying "his footwork looks terrible at 1B." I replied that the team has much worse fielders like Marte and Vientos, but wondered about this impression of Alonso on a bad fielder. I never thought of Alonso as someone who I want to see at DH but these guys who have been watching DH baseball much longer than I have seem to think he is a perfect fit for the position.

Here’s my take on Alonso’s fielding:

When he came to the majors the prevailing thought was that his defense was so bad that he’d have to be a DH. But he’s never been that bad in my mind. Ever since he came to the majors, he’s been very good at scooping balls in the dirt. He’s gotten better at going back on the ball on pop-ups and has become a take-charge guy in the infield.

He still doesn’t know which ball hit to his right is his and which one should be handled by the second baseman. He’s never been great on throws to second base and this year his throws to the pitcher covering first have not been good. At all. And we saw him make a dreadful throw to the plate and another one he didn’t even try because in my opinion he was too scared to attempt it.

I don’t get criticisms about his footwork. He goes across the bag more than any other 1B I’ve seen but he always makes the play. He’s generally stretching in the right direction. He has no problem charging in on bunts or going back on pops.

His throwing is a huge problem. Footwork doesn’t register for me. He’s a competent 1B right now but I could see him being a future DH.

I like him as a DH and a more athletic A+ defender at first base. I bet that Alonso would be a better hitter as a DH, because he wouldnt have to be afraid to throw a ball to home.

Imagine if the Mets were in game seven of the World Series and Alonso threw the ball home like an old lady and the Mets lost.

Did anyone see today that the Dodgers acquired Alexis Diaz?
