Marte is easily one of my favorite players on the team, and when he’s healthy, he’s an absolute force (as you also mentioned!). But the key is to have him stay healthy. I’m still convinced the reason they fizzled at the end of 2022 was because he was hurt. His speed, leadership in the clubhouse and “when he’s healthy” are huge factors in this being a good team with playoff aspirations to being an absolute FORCE.
The Mets can get value in Marte if Mendoza uses him in a strictly platoon DH position, a pinch runner and a pinch hitter. It seems that he is untradable because of his salary. I think he will be a
When healthy. You can start a sentence for so many players on the wrong side of 30 with those two words. Why not see if the DBacks will do a swap of bad contracts and take Marte for Jordan Montgomery? Or eat a portion of his salary and try to move him in a package for Castillo of the Mariners? Castillo make almost $22 million a year and has a no trade clause and the M’s need offense to keep up with the Astros and Rangers. Castillo gives the Mets an ace of a starter.
Marte's on the team so you might as well try to get some use out of him. The short side of a DH platoon is about the smallest role a guy can have outside of backup catcher.
He was very productive versus LHP last year. He also had a .397 BABIP against them, which he's unlikely to duplicate.
In an ideal world, they'd trade him, even if that meant picking up most of his salary. But it's probably more trouble to find a deal than it's worth. I'll keep my fingers crossed that he can give 200 or so PA at a league-average rate with the platoon advantage. And then we won't have to worry about him in 2026 and beyond.
MLBTR today wrote that the Mets had engaged the Royals at the meetings regarding Marte but the Royals changed their mind after initial interest. Marte will have to show he is worth a new deal. I cannot remember a year that Marte didn’t take a vacation.
I had heard that the Mets told Marte they would look to ship him off so he could increase his playing time in a crucial walk year. If he hopes to land a new contract next year then he should want to play everyday to show he still has what it takes.
But assuming he is with the Mets for 2025, I like him at DH across from Winker. Marte had one of the more clutch bats during the postseason and he was often on the base path in some of the most clutch moments.

This is a terrific article. Thanks, Dalton!
I can see a Marte/Winker platoon at DH working out.

Hopefully, we can expect nothing, because maybe we can find another team to take him.
