McNeil is here to stay through the end of his contract. Acuna is exciting and has tons of upside, but remember McNeil has been an above league average hitter for the majority of his career. He's also extremely versatile in the field. I have a hard time believing the Mets would trade away an asset like him while we are making a run at a championship. The young guys have youth on their side. They can wait their turn.
I think it’s very fair to bring up McNeil’s versatility in the field. He doesn’t scare the beejeezus out of me in the OF like say Daniel Murphy did. I feel like his versatility and veteran presence can be a good luck for other teams though.
McNeil deserves extra time to prove whether he can be a contributor whether that is as a starter or as a backup. As a backup he is very talented to fill in at 2B or the outfield. It would not have been a strange question to ask why he was not in the lineup after a good day at the plate, and the same could have been asked about Nimmo sitting after nine RBI.
Acuna's star is rising and with him hitting .300 and leading the team with seven steals and fielding his position better than McNeil could. Despite Tyrone Taylor's day yesterday, I see McNeil getting playing time in CF so that Acuna stays in the lineup. Now, all bets are off as we get to the trade deadline as to who stays or who goes, but at this point, not sure what the team would need to fill in. Sandy Alcantara could be a huge addition to the rotation and Luis Robert Jr. would be an improvement in CF. In the meantime, Let's keep winning. Jealous you live close enough to see lots of games. Just bought 7/23 tix against the Angels.
Nimmo had a stomach bug (that he allegedly played through on Monday). Imagine how he would have done if he was 100%! I too was a little baffled why McNeil was benched yesterday. But Tyrone Taylor and Luisangel Acuña more than made up for it defensively and at the plate. Is McNeil obsolete or redundant now? Dunno!
Mind expanding on the phasing out part? We often joke about Baty going to Japan in the game chats, but I feel like McNeil (against my wishes) would be redundant here.
People are thinking the end is near for McNeil and that some collection of players are going to put him on the bench or send him out of town. And my opinion is that's not the way this is going to play out. He's going to play the vast majority of games the rest of the season and he'll be in the Mets' lineup when the trade deadline passes and he'll be in the lineup for their first playoff game.
I've mentally moved on from McNiel, who once was the obvious person to play 2B, but who had been moved here and there, like his utterly forgettable stints at 3B. I liked him as a fellow CSU product (he's from Cal State Long Beach) and the "git r did" mantra of the Dirtbags. I think his strength now is as sold utility player with a high floor and a modest ceiling. His attitude is a bit of a drag, and what he went through with Lindor a while back stunk. That said, good baseball teams need plenty of those types, so I'm skeptical of Mets letting him go unless the return is quite solid.
Thanks for the insight on the “git r did” mantra of Cal State. I did not know that! It makes sense that he provides this gritty old school type of play that I grew up with then. My issue is that I don’t want to mentally move on! (For selfish reasons) But I also realize that many of my all time faves weren’t lifelong Mets either. Sigh.
I went to Cal State Fullerton back in the glory days of College World Series wins under Augie Garrido. I guess I should say aura rather than mantra. The Dirtbags always had that down and dirty approach.
I don't think McNeil is the odd man out and I don't think he is a platoon player also because his career numbers bear that fact. Acuna is having an good season but he isn't better than McNeil yet and he may never become better than McNeil career-wise. Acuna has earned more playing time and McNeil's versatility with Taylor's slow start has accommodated the situation.
When I read the headline, I thought to myself "I was wondering the same thing". It will be interesting to see how they handle all the parts going forward. I felt like McNeil and Baty as left-handed batters will never be on the same team at the same time. If they still have any belief in Baty (and he continues to mash in Syracuse for a while), it seem like Jeff might be a valuable piece to fill a hole later on in the year. A lot has to go right with both Baty and Acuna.
As shown last night, there are better defensive centerfield options than McNeil - there is no way he makes the catch that Taylor pulled off, and if Taylor continues to hit like he has in the last couple days, McNeil will see less time in the outfield. Acuna brings the speed factor (another element Jeff does not have) and if he can continue to hit over .275, he will get a lot of playing time.

Mendoza will get everyone playing time and keep all of the veterans fresh and well rested through the summer.
There is something to be said about veterans getting their playing time but also providing the guidance for this youth movement happening
There's a school of thought that any sports headline that asks a yes or no question should always be answered, "No."
My opinion is that the idea the Mets are going to phase out McNeil in 2025 is way off base.
