Ending with quite a compliment to a GM when the adversary is impressed. But even Stearns has made some mistakes and I worry about the whole of Mets fandom now loves Stearns after quite a few players over-performing and they reach the NLCS. What happens if, they lost one more game somewhere along the way and the DBacks got in? What if his signings were good, but they got hurt? What if Lindor didn’t become an MVP candidate and was still good?

I worry about the expectations of a Mets fan and how they will react when the chips don’t fall as they hope.

My opinion is that this is over-the-top worrying on your part.

Here's how I would respond to the points you raise:

1. Everyone makes mistakes

2. If they lost one more game and didn't make the playoffs, they still won 88 games, a 13-game improvement over the previous season, and more than the vast majority of fans expected at the beginning of the season.

3. This type of what-if with injuries applies to all teams, not just the Mets. And it cuts both ways. What if Senga didn't miss virtually the entire season? What if Alvarez, Raley, Smith, Nunez, Reid-Foley and Garrett didn't get hurt? What if Alonso and Nimmo had better seasons?

4. There's absolutely no point in worrying about the expectations of anyone outside the owner and the GM.

It’s pretty funny hearing your logic after hearing on talk radio and reading on comments that if the Mets got Flaherty, they might have been in the World Series. You really think that if the Mets missed the playoffs by one game, fans would have been pleased? If they missed by three or four, then ‘ok, they won 84 games, but they weren’t a playoff contender like they said they were’.

I know you read the comments in The Athletic because you also comment there, but Mets fans are also expecting them to have a lineup of nine all-stars and five Cy Young candidates in the rotation, so I don’t see what you see.

The comments section at The Athletic is getting more toxic by the day. Just goes to show that just charging for content isn't going to eliminate loonies from the comments section.

You can go back and read the comments section of any website and the majority opinion was that the 2024 Mets would not make the playoffs before the season started. Would they have been "happy" with 88 wins? That's impossible to say with any degree of certainty. But with the previous season having just 75 wins and with no major trades or free agents imported in the offseason -- if there would be a large segment of fans unhappy with that, well I would categorize those fans as unrealistic and not worthy of having their opinions respected in any serious degree.

When I first started Mets360, the goal was to be the biggest site out there. That didn't come close to happening. But biggest doesn't mean best and I'd rather have a group of intelligent, passionate readers than a bunch of yokels. And I can't see one reason to concern myself one bit with the opinions of yokels.

I'm getting ready to send you an email on an unrelated subject.
