I like that Alvarez is remembering how to hit home runs. That's going to help the big league team later this season. My guess is they will keep him down through the all star break, but I'd be happy to be wrong about that. If I'm Stearns, I'm a little concerned about having half of the lineup filled with unproven younger players (Vientos, Mauricio, Baty, Alvarez) and might be looking to shed one of them in a trade before installing the other 3 as regulars.

I would think out of the trio of Vientos, Baty and Mauricio, Mauricio has the most upside with his power, speed and defense making Baty and Vientos expendable. We need Alvarez. And, the new pitcher of the day today is, Alejandro Carillo. Pop got popped and DFA'd.

Let’s not forget how tawdry Alvy’s defense was. Bad throws, wrong throws, lazy swipes at breaking balls in the dirt. The staff’s ERA was almost a full run worse with Alvarez behind the dish than Torrens. He had developed bad habits on offense and defense and let’s hope his exodus, however short or long it is, gets his head on straight. Or as George Kennedy once said to Paul Newman in Cool Hand Luke, he’s “gotta get his mind right.”

So far Alvarez is still hasn't corrected his approach to hitting and should still play in the AAA. I agree that Torrens is being over exposed offensively. Alvarez needs to get some offensive success before getting promoted. Meanwhile they have at least two good defensive catchers until hopefully Alvarez offensively improves.

Acuna is the fourth option at second base, fourth option at third base, fourth option at centerfield and the third option at shortstop for the major league team. His 712 OPS at AAA doesn't deserve a promotion. They should try to trade him at the deadline because next year he doesn’t have any options and they will lose him anyway. I'm not worried about him being the next Brett Butler.

"So far Alvarez is still hasn't corrected his approach to hitting"

And you know this how? Have you been watching Syracuse Mets games? I have no idea how Alvarez approaches his PA in SYR. I do know that he's hit more homers in the minors than he did in the majors in significantly fewer PA. I also know that his BABIP is seriously low. Could those things mean he hasn't corrected his approach. Yes, they could. Could they mean that he's improved at the plate and just hasn't had the overall results to show for it yet? Again, yes they could.

I'm concerned about the strikeouts. But I'm digging the OBP-AVG of .081 since his demotion. And the .383 ISO since the demotion is plenty encouraging.

I based it on his 12.5 LD% and reduced EV in AAA. My deduction could be incorrect but I don't see a significant statistical improvement to warrant a call up yet.

Also from Cool Hand Luke “what we have here is a failure to communicate. If two of the players in the seventh and eighth hole were hitting, I would have no issue living with Torrens and his weak hitting. But the Mets really can’t afford to be without Alvarez’s bad if he has started hitting again, and I am happy to see the long ball down in Syracuse. That’s what he needs to do on the Mets and we know he has the ability to do so. There is no downside to keeping him down on the farm until after the All-Star break, but if Torrens continues to produce next to nothing at the plate then Alvarez needs to come up sooner.

I am still shocked that the coaches can’t do a better job of fixing these hitters and perhaps they need a new approach. The first five batters in the order really don’t but the next four do. To me, this is their failure to communicate, and to look at hours of videotape, and to work with these hitters to bring them back to where they should be is their job. That should be something they do with all of the hitters on regular basis soon when they see them falling into a bad habit. They need to stop them and work on correcting it.

I also have no issue, breaking the long jam of under performing prospects who are on the Mets roster, and including some in a trade for a slid player if not a star player.
