Despite going 3-12 in their last 15 games, the Mets are the top team in the Wild Card standings and are just one-half game behind the division-leading Phillies. It’s no fun to lose and it’s painful to play at a .200 winning percentage over 15 games. The hitting has been sporadic, the starters are struggling with all of the injuries and the pen has had at least two members going thru brutal stretches just about all month.
Juan Soto, Brandon Nimmo and Brett Baty have been hitting in this stretch, while Jeff McNeil, Francisco Lindor, Tyrone Taylor and the catchers have not. Luis Torrens and Hayden Senger are a combined 5-38, the same mark as Taylor.
On the pitching side of things, Clay Holmes and Frankie Montas have been good, while Paul Blackburn, Griffin Canning and David Peterson have not. The bullpen feels like a disaster from top to bottom but it’s mostly been Huascar Brazoban, Jose Castillo, Reed Garrett and half of the players on the Syracuse shuttle. And Castillo and most of the lousy shuttle guys are gone. Garrett threw a scoreless inning Saturday.
Jose Butto, Chris Devenski, Edwin Diaz, Justin Hagenman, Dedniel Nunez, Brandon Waddell and Austin Warren have combined for 28.1 scoreless innings in this stretch.
The Mets have pretty much earned that 3-12 record. Yet it doesn’t feel to me like things are destined to be this bleak going forward. Another strong start by Montas today will go a long way towards making things seem better. And if Lindor would manage to stop striking out and popping up to an infielder so often – that would be great, too. Yet those things are far from a given.
So, do you view the glass as half full or half empty?
Glass is always half full as a Met fan. It’s the only way to keep our sanity. Given that we had a disastrous two weeks and are still right near the top of the division, shows they are not struggling alone.
I'm an optimist but I'm a realist. If Senga and Manaea return and pitch effectively then their rotation will have four effective starters. Bullpen needs help. CF, C and 3B needs an offensive upgrade. The current players at these positions are not performing offensively. They could used some improvements at the trade deadline. Their pitching has got them to where they are, and the pitching success will determine if they will make a playoffs. It will be close but they will manage to make the playoffs.
