I think Stearns has done a nice job of building depth and flexibility into this staff. I have zero regrets that he didn’t sign one of the big names to a long term deal and think the quantity versus quality makes sense given the fragility of all pitchers. It’s a crap shoot and I’d rather spread my bets around the table. That said, I did read (or think I did) that they signed Tehran to a minor league deal, so let’s hope that this horror movie does not get a sequel.
I think that they can use 12 or fewer pitchers in 2025. The problem will be who will be stretched out in the minor leagues in case they need a sixth starter in April. Canning and Blackburn don't have options so they have to be on the MLB roster. Megill has an option. Would Stearns assign him to Syracuse because of that? If Canning, Blackburn and Megill make to MLB roster then maybe the Mets will have a six man rotation initially so that Senga would be ease in.
This year the Mets have more depth in AAA. Sproat, McLean and Tidwell should be ready if the need arises later in the year. Kranick might make the team as a relief pitcher but if not will he be a starter in Syracuse? It would be nice to have a SP5 that could deliver a 3.08 ERA with 5+ IP average. That is the stats for Jose Butto when he started last year and was sent down and he hasn't started a game again!
In addition to being very healthy those 4 Phillies pitchers were very good, with the worst ERA being 3.57. Chances are that won't happen again, especially in that ballpark.
Quite the opposite, the Yankees look like they are needing at least one starter. The Mets match up well in a trade with the extra starting pitching. Might the Yankees be interested in one, say Clayton Holmes?
We're all just hoping the bailing wire, duct tape, and safety pins hold. Seems like a big task to me.
